This year, the top stream of outdoor sports "camping" has become the focus, "Flower and Youth Season 4" has become a big hit with the "camping" theme, and the tourism industry has seen a spike in orders with the "camping" concept The youngsters are camping with each other and embracing nature ......

Two sets of data better reflect the explosion of the "camping" concept - according to enterprise data, in 2020, 8,758 new "campsite" related enterprises were registered in China, an increase of 227.52% year-on-year. In 2020, 8,758 new enterprises related to "campgrounds" were registered in China, an increase of 227.52%; in 2021, 21,000 new enterprises were registered, an increase of 139.50%. There are currently 47,000 camping-related enterprises in China, nearly half of which have been established for less than one year. From January to April 2022 alone, more than 7,200 camping-related enterprises have been established. According to the report "China Consumer Brand Trends (2022)", from 2014 to 2021, the market size of Chinese camping campsites increased from 7.71 billion yuan to 29.90 billion yuan, with an expected growth rate of 18.6% in 2022 and a market size of 35.46 billion yuan; it is expected that by 2027, the Chinese camping equipment market alone will reach a size of US$15.9 billion.

In the design world, personalised 'camping' products are also emerging, with designers working to create aesthetically pleasing and practical design objects. With this trend, even small design ideas can be recognised by users. Today mattDESIGN will explore the entry point for design in the "camping" trend.

I. Small and beautiful camping products

It is easier for designers to build products and create user value by starting with 'small and beautiful' camping products. With the boom in 'camping', users are demanding aesthetic, diverse and personalised products, with camping lights, grills, cookers, projectors ..... Products have been revisited by designers and given a new lease of life.

Versatile and elegant camping light Conic

The gap between an outdoor torch and a portable light is getting smaller and smaller, thanks to the constant refinement of design. This camping light from designers Han youngseok and Park Jaehyeon, Conic, is both, with a compact, tapered appearance that gives it an elegant and sturdy feel, and an expandable, detachable structure that allows the light to be focused using the shade, and can be easily attached to a hiking buckle, clipped to a backpack, or hung high up in the campground to assist with cooking or board games. Back indoors, the Conic can be transformed into another shape to provide the ambient light needed to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Snow peak mini hozuki camping light

Cute and charming, this mini hozuki camping light by Snow peak is designed to ditch the traditional torch construction and approach for a small, bright light with a variety of brightness options. With a magnetic ring on top for easy holding and hanging, and a silicone shade to soften the light, it can be used both indoors and outdoors, and is a treat to explore for reading under the light or enjoying a candlelit dinner.

Choi's portable camping electric cooker

Away from the city, in the dark and windy of the campsite, with limited ingredients, a hot bowl of soup would be a great treat. Designer Yunsoo Choi has created a camping electric cooker that can be used to make soups and stews. The cooker and accessories are compact, with various accessories stacked in telescopic layers and carried by a raised, detachable handlebar. An auxiliary light is included to satisfy the desire to cook late at night. The timer and temperature control interface is located around the front panel and is clear and unobtrusively designed with a modern aesthetic.

Portable video projector The Suitcase

Video viewing equipment is one of the immediate needs for camping entertainment. Korean designer Hyeonseok Kang has created The Suitcase, a video projector that folds into a suitcase. Unlike traditional projection devices that require a portable stand, the designer has combined a stand and a TV with a foldable flexible display and made it easy to store and carry. The flexible display is designed with a two-axis hinge in the middle, allowing the user to freely adjust any angle, fold or unfold it.

II. The most hardcore camping gear

In addition to "small but beautiful design products", designers can also create unique industrial products from the perspective of high technology, new materials and new technologies to create a competitive advantage in the industry. mattDESIGN shares a few hardcore products from this perspective - -

Space Camper with FORM's camping version Cybertruck

Not long ago, Musk claimed that the Cybertruck would be "Tesla's best product ever", offering better utility than a truck and better performance than a sports car, but does the Cybertruck's design live up to its name? From the outside, the Cybertruck's shell is made of 30X cold-rolled stainless steel, which is resistant to 9mm bullets, the same material used by Space X on the Starship. Both Camper and FORM have optimised the Cybertruck's camping capabilities -

The Space Camper is designed using aircraft-grade materials and takes advantage of the shape of the Cybertruck roof to increase space at the rear of the vehicle, especially at the top. the Space Camper version of the Cybertruck has a fold-out bed that can be used as a sofa, a sink, lighting, power outlets and connections, and the possibility of adding a kitchen, shower and film projector. Furthermore, there are extensions under the bed that can double as a table and seating.

The FORM CAMPER is more in line with our comfort requirements for camping space than the FORM and Cybertruck combination, with a total interior area of 70 square feet, a queen-size memory mattress, a multifunctional kitchen, a shower room and a separate awning.

FORM has been detailed with user comfort in mind, is spacious, highly flexible and compatible with most pick-up trucks. The kitchen can be used both indoors and outdoors and can be taken outdoors with just a push. Refrigerator, hob, cutlery, pans and coffee machine are all available. The shower can be used continuously for two hours with FORM's filtration system, the shower produces a mist shower effect and uses only 0.8 gallons per minute. the FORM camper is equipped with a separate awning and is able to provide 124 square feet of dry space.

AERIAL hammock tent

The integration of multiple functions in camping equipment is also an innovative point that designers can cut through. Designers Andrew Gardner and Jacob Campbell have created a unique AERIAL hammock tent that combines the security of a tent with the comfort of a hammock, and stows away in a tripod bag-sized cylindrical bag for easy portability. With its special suspension system and high-strength webbing, the AERIAL can be attached at four points and stably tied to a tree or car. the AERIAL's access points on both sides can be pulled back for a panoramic view and if it rains, the tent comes with a wind and rain cover. The design details are also spot on, with pockets inside the AERIAL for storing personal items and a gear hammock suspended below the tent that can be used as a shelf to store bags, making it a good choice for advanced campers.

Portable wind turbine Shine Turbine

In addition to the integration of multiple functions, clean and renewable energy sources are also innovative points that designers can cut through. The Shine Turbine provides a reliable source of renewable energy through electricity generation and can collect the power needed for three mobile phones in one hour. Compared to traditional solar chargers that rely on direct sunlight, the Shine Turbine has low environmental requirements and can operate in winds of 13 to 45 kilometres per hour and temperatures of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius.

iii. Back to the essence of design through service

After learning so much about the design of "camping" products, designers can still return to the essence of design and use our years of experience to provide more targeted services to domestic "camping" related industries in the direction of interior design, environmental design and brand design, in response to the fledgling domestic "camping" industry.

What is the difference in design when it comes to campsites at 3000m altitude?

The Songtsam Rainbows tented camp is located in the Upper Rainbows village at the foot of the Kawabog, at an altitude of approximately 3150m, and the design had to take into account the strong winds and rain, and the temperature differences between day and night. The designers used Tentipi's patented ventilation system and the world's best outdoor polyester-cotton tent canvas to withstand the changing outdoor conditions and maintain a comfortable temperature inside the tent. Due to the extreme temperature difference between day and night, users returning from the Meili Snow Mountain in the evening can easily get chilled, so the interior is equipped with comfortable, warm, waterproof and non-slip camp shoes, a thermos with hot water and ginger tea, and a heater that is lit at night, all of which are designed from the user's point of view. The 10 Sami nomadic style tipis in the camp, facing Maatsum and Baw Bamun, offer a breathtaking view of the sacred mountains and are designed to add to the user's experience.

Beach camps within cities, how are they designed?

The urban beach campsite is a very popular recreational project for young people nowadays, where they can make friends and have fun while camping. The design has to meet the needs of the hipsters in terms of function, taking into account various aspects such as accommodation, catering and entertainment in the space planning, as well as branding and brand influence for the client in the operation.

Take Wuhan East Lake Beach Camp as an example, the campground is located in the section from Chu Feng Yuan to Mao Shan in East Lake. The campground has a distinctive design, with 12 round star houses and a simple and natural appearance; it also has five Korean-style tents, which are made of encrypted waterproof and flame-retardant oxford fabric, creating a feeling of gauze. The interior design is simple and mainly functional, with printed carpets, sofas and chairs, beach chairs, coat racks and bedside tables. The campsite has a wide range of activities such as band performances, water activities, flavourful dances and open air films ...... This is an important factor in attracting users who can keep bringing new friends to experience it. The overall atmosphere is also very relaxed and in tune with the youthful mood. Users can move their tables and chairs outdoors, spread out picnic mats, set out various desserts and snacks and participate in the camp's activities.
